Lauren Taslitz is a lyricist-librettist who splits her time between Chicago, IL and New York, NY. In 2014, when Lauren was in her 50’s, she left her life in Chicago, including her husband, her three children, two grandchildren, her 80-year-old mother, and her career as a lawyer,  to attend the Musical Theater Writing Program at NYU Tisch. 

Lauren began writing parody lyrics for community theatre 20 years ago, when her oldest child entered middle school. There she learned to write lyrics “music first,” and  because she directed the production, she learned that she had to think about more than being clever with her words; she had to have a vision of what was happening on stage. Next, she wrote and directed a series of musical sketches for the annual fundraiser for The Women’s Club of Evanston, a 100 year old, large social-service organization. At The Women’s Club, she was introduced to Cheri Coons, a musical theater writer, who encouraged her to take classes at The Chicago Dramatists. There she wrote her first full-length musical, Join The Club, about the importance of being part of a community of women. 

At Tisch, Lauren was the oldest person in her class. She quickly built strong artistic relationships with collaborators that we two decades younger than she was. Because of this experience, Lauren discovered a passion for intergenerational collaboration that fuels her work to this day. In her work and in her processes, Lauren aims to disrupt stereotypes of older women and inspire dialogue between people across generations. 

Her musical works include Join the Club, After They’ve Gone, The Quantification of Relative Human Insignificance, A Game to Save the World, You Gave Me A Sheep, Red Bean Paste, Watch Me, The Qualms, The Whole is Greater than The Sum of Its Parts, and Unicorn. Lauren's work has been performed at Barrington Stage Company, NYTB at the Cell, Chicago Dramatists, The Porchlight Music Theatre, Princeton University, and various other venues in New York and Chicago. Regretting Almost Everything, her cabaret show with composer Danny Ursetti, debuted at Mr. Finn’s Cabaret at Barrington Stage in August of 2017 and had its New York premiere at Feinstein's/54 Below in April of 2018. 

Lauren has participated in residencies at Goodspeed Musicals, The 5th Avenue Theatre, The Catwalk Institute and Barrington Stage Company. Regretting Almost Everything was a semi-final selection the O’Neill Musical Theater Conference in 2018 and a finalist at The Dramatist Guild. She is currently collaborating with Emily Chiu on a new musical, Bak Chang, commissioned by The 5th Avenue Theater.
